For the ‘rocking elastic generation’ retirement may be a non-event
- speakers at the Mature Marketing Summit will challenge perceptions of ageing and retirement
The Mature Marketing Summit will take place on Monday October 5 2015, to address the lack of marketing understanding and best practice in addressing the needs of the 50+ consumer.
At the event, organised by the Mature Marketing Association, delegates will be able to share best practice, improve their understanding of the UK’s ageing population and meet others with a shared interest in the subject. A wide range of mature marketing experts will speak on topics including advertising, funeral plans, mobile phones, music, publishing, research and retirement.
Jacqui Bateson, of the Skipton Building Society will ask, in her presentation, if retirement is a process, an event or a non-event. Marie Stafford, European Director, J. Walter Thompson Innovation Group, will present findings from the new JWTIntelligence report, The Elastic Generation, which challenges assumptions about UK 50-69 year olds. And Dr Julia Jones will present research showing the importance of 45-65 year olds as consumers of rock and pop music.
It all adds up to a large, complex and diverse group of consumers, which marketers have yet to understand fully, says Mark Beasley, Chairman, The Mature Marketing Association. “The UK has an ageing population and within 20 years the number of people aged over 65 will have increased by 50 per cent. Yet research studies tell us that there continues to be a mis-alignment between business and older consumers. Many businesses are failing to address this lucrative and discerning market and older consumers continue to be misunderstood and patronised.
“Following feedback from the inaugural Mature Marketing Summit in 2014 we know that marketers are waking up to the huge gap in segmentation and targeting for this important group of consumers. Our mix of speakers and topics will give insight and provoke debate that we hope will change the face of mature marketing in the UK for the better."
